How it works

Pick a holiday — or your own date — and the countdown ticks live: whole days, then the hours, minutes and seconds left until midnight at the start of that day in your own time zone. Alongside the clock you get the “sleeps” figure (the plain calendar-day difference, which is what people mean by “how many days until Christmas”), the same span as weeks plus days, the total hours remaining, and the number of Monday-to-Friday working days left before the holiday.

Fixed dates such as Christmas, Halloween and Valentine’s Day are hard-coded; everything that moves is computed. Easter Sunday uses the Gregorian computus (the Meeus/Jones/Butcher algorithm), and Good Friday, Easter Monday and Mothering Sunday are derived from it as Easter − 2, Easter + 1 and Easter − 21 days. Weekday-based holidays follow their official rules: US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Memorial Day the last Monday of May, Labor Day the first Monday of September, and Black Friday and Cyber Monday are Thanksgiving + 1 and + 4 days. Lunar New Year comes from a short built-in table of dates (2024–2035) because it follows the Chinese lunisolar calendar.

Everything runs in your browser with plain JavaScript — no account, no ads and no network calls, so the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded. Copy the result as text or download a one-event .ics file to drop the holiday into any calendar app. Add ?now=2026-12-01T09:00 to the URL to freeze the countdown and preview it from any moment.

Frequently asked questions

How many days until Christmas?

Choose Christmas Day from the holiday list and the countdown shows the answer instantly: the whole days left, the hours, minutes and seconds ticking down to midnight at the start of 25 December in your own time zone, and the plain calendar-day figure people usually mean by "sleeps". You also get the span as weeks plus days, the total hours remaining and the number of Monday-to-Friday working days left before the holiday.

Which holidays are included, and are moving dates like Easter and Thanksgiving correct?

The list covers around 36 US, UK and Canadian holidays plus Lunar New Year — from New Year's Day and Valentine's Day to Halloween, Black Friday, Boxing Day and New Year's Eve. Nothing is hard-coded per year: Easter Sunday is calculated with the Gregorian computus (the Meeus/Jones/Butcher algorithm), Good Friday, Easter Monday and Mothering Sunday are derived from it, and weekday holidays follow their official rules — US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Memorial Day the last Monday of May, Labor Day the first Monday of September. Lunar New Year uses a built-in table of dates for 2024–2035 because it follows the Chinese lunisolar calendar.

Can I count down to my own date, such as a holiday trip or a birthday?

Yes. Pick "Custom date…" in the holiday menu, choose any future date and give it a name, and the countdown, the weeks-and-days breakdown and the working-days figure all apply to your date. You can then download a one-event .ics file to add it to Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar, or copy the full result as plain text. Everything is worked out in your browser — the date you enter is never sent anywhere.
