How it works

This online drum machine is a step sequencer: eight drum sounds down the side, one column per 16th note across the top. Each square is a 16th note and the shaded columns are the down beats. Click a square to place a hit, press Play, and the loop repeats until you stop it. Start from a preset like four on the floor, boom bap or trap, then move the kick and snare around until the groove feels right.

Every drum is synthesised live with the Web Audio API — the kick is a pitch-swept sine, the snare and hats are shaped noise — so there are no samples to download and the beat is scheduled on the audio clock instead of a JavaScript timer, which keeps the timing tight. Add swing to push the off-beat 16ths late for a looser, more human feel. Nothing is uploaded: the pattern, the sound and the WAV export all happen in your browser, with no account and no ads. Use Copy pattern to save the grid as text, or Download WAV loop to drop the beat straight into a DAW.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a drum beat with an online drum machine?

Pick a preset such as four on the floor, boom bap or trap to get a groove started, then click the squares in the grid to add or remove hits. Each column is a 16th note and each row is a drum sound, so a kick on columns 1, 5, 9 and 13 gives you a steady four-to-the-floor pulse. Press Play (or the spacebar) to hear the loop, change the tempo, and add swing to push the off-beats late for a looser feel.

Is this drum machine really free and does it need a download?

Yes, it is completely free and there is nothing to install. The page runs entirely in your browser: the drum sounds are synthesised on the fly with the Web Audio API rather than loaded as samples, so no audio files are downloaded and no pattern is ever uploaded to a server. There are no ads, no account and no export limits.

Can I export the beat as an audio file?

Yes. Choose how many times the loop should repeat and click Download WAV loop — the pattern is rendered sample by sample in your browser and saved as a standard 44.1 kHz WAV you can drop straight into a DAW. You can also use Copy pattern to put the grid on your clipboard as text, which is handy for saving a beat or sharing it in a message.
