How it works

Pick a test length, then start typing the text shown above the box — the timer only starts with your first keystroke, so there is no countdown to rush you. Every character you type is compared with the target text: correct characters turn green, wrong ones turn red, and the speed, accuracy and mistake counters update live. The test ends when the clock runs out or when you finish the text, whichever comes first, and you can stop early at any time.

Speed is measured the standard way: one “word” is five characters, so net WPM is your correctly typed characters divided by five, divided by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM counts every keystroke including the wrong ones, so the gap between the two numbers tells you how much accuracy is costing you. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that hit the right character — backspacing to fix a typo repairs the text but not the accuracy score, exactly like a real typing exam. Switch the practice text to Your own text to drill a passage, a code snippet or vocabulary you actually need. Everything runs in your browser: no account, no ads, and nothing you type is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How many words per minute is a good typing speed?

The average adult types around 40 WPM. Anything from 55 to 65 WPM is comfortably fast for office work, and professional typists usually sit between 75 and 100 WPM. Accuracy matters more than raw speed: 50 WPM at 98% accuracy beats 70 WPM at 85%, because every mistake costs time to find and fix.

How is WPM calculated in this typing test?

One "word" counts as five characters, the standard used by typing exams. Net WPM is your correctly typed characters divided by five, divided by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM counts every keystroke including the wrong ones, so the gap between the two numbers shows exactly what your errors are costing you.

Can I test my typing speed with my own text?

Yes. Set the practice text to "Your own text", paste any passage, code snippet or vocabulary list, and press "Use this text". The whole test runs in your browser, so nothing you paste or type is uploaded, stored or shared — useful if you practise with work material.
