How it works

Paste or type your text and the sentence counter splits it on sentence-ending punctuation (., !, ?, โ€ฆ) while ignoring the traps that make naive counters wrong: common abbreviations like โ€œDr.โ€, โ€œMr.โ€, โ€œetc.โ€ and โ€œe.g.โ€, initials such as โ€œU.S.โ€, and decimal numbers like โ€œ$3.50โ€. You get the sentence count plus the average words per sentence, the longest and shortest sentence, and how many of your sentences are questions or exclamations.

The breakdown below the stats lists every sentence with its own word count, and any sentence over your chosen threshold (25 words by default) is flagged as long โ€” the quickest way to find the run-on sentences that hurt readability. Everything is computed in your browser with JavaScript: your text is never uploaded, stored or sent to a server, so it is safe for drafts, contracts and anything confidential.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count the sentences in a paragraph?

Paste the paragraph into the box above. The sentence count updates as you type, and the breakdown underneath lists each sentence with its own word count, so you can see exactly where one sentence ends and the next begins.

How many sentences are in my text, and how does the counter decide?

A sentence ends at a period, exclamation mark, question mark, ellipsis or a hard line break. The counter deliberately ignores false endings: abbreviations such as "Dr.", "Mr." and "etc.", initials such as "U.S.", and decimal numbers such as "$3.50" never split a sentence, so the total matches what a human would count.

What is a good average words per sentence?

Most readability guides aim for 15 to 20 words per sentence on average, with anything past about 25 words reading as a run-on. This tool shows your average, your longest and shortest sentence, and flags every sentence over a threshold you choose (25 words by default) so you can split the worst offenders.
