How it works

This scientific notation converter turns any number into standard scientific notation (one digit before the decimal point, times a power of ten), E-notation, engineering notation and plain decimal form — all at the same time, live as you type. It reads whatever you paste: 0.00000123, 1.23e-6, 1.23E-6 and 1.23 × 10⁻⁶ are all understood, and commas or spaces used as thousands separators are ignored. Pick a significant-figures value to round the answer the way your physics or chemistry homework asks for.

The conversion works on the digits of your number as text rather than on floating-point values, so very large and very small exponents stay exact instead of drifting — 1.23 × 10⁻⁶ expands to exactly 0.00000123. How do you write a number in scientific notation?

You move the decimal point until exactly one non-zero digit sits in front of it, then multiply by ten raised to the number of places you moved. Moving left gives a positive exponent, moving right gives a negative one: 12345 becomes 1.2345 × 10⁴ and 0.0000456 becomes 4.56 × 10⁻⁵. What is 0.00000123 in scientific notation?

0.00000123 is 1.23 × 10⁻⁶, written as 1.23e-6 in E-notation. The decimal point moves six places to the right to leave 1.23, so the exponent is −6.
