Type any word, name, postcode or reference number and it is converted letter by letter into
the NATO phonetic alphabet (also called the military or ICAO spelling alphabet) — A becomes
Alfa, B becomes Bravo, C becomes Charlie. Numbers are spelled out too, spaces between words
show up as a / so the reader knows where one word ends, and you can pick the
separator and capitalisation that suit your notes or script. Switch the direction to
NATO phonetic → text to decode a spelling someone read out to you: paste
"Sierra Oscar Sierra" and you get back "SOS". Anything that has no code word (punctuation,

What is the NATO phonetic alphabet?
The NATO phonetic alphabet (officially the ICAO/NATO spelling alphabet, often called the military alphabet) replaces each letter with a code word that is hard to mishear: Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, and so on through Zulu. Pilots, sailors, emergency services and call-centre agents use it so letters like B, P, V and D cannot be confused over a noisy radio or phone line. Digits are read out as their own words too (Zero, One, Two, Three), and this converter shows the full chart underneath the tool.
How do I spell my name in the NATO phonetic alphabet?

Is it Alfa or Alpha, Juliett or Juliet?
The official spellings are Alfa and Juliett. The extra letters were dropped and added on purpose so that speakers of languages other than English do not pronounce "ph" as /p/ or leave the final "t" of Juliet silent. Radio operators also say Niner for 9, Fower for 4 and Tree for 3 to keep numbers distinct. This tool outputs the official forms, but when you decode a spelling it accepts the common variants (Alpha, Juliet, Xray, Whisky, Niner, Fower, Tree) as well.
