How it works

This internet speed indicator measures your connection from inside the browser. It requests this very page several times with cache-busting URLs, times how long the response headers take to arrive (that is your latency, or ping) and how long the body takes to download (that gives the throughput estimate in megabits per second). Jitter is the average variation between consecutive latency samples โ€” low jitter matters more than raw speed for video calls and gaming. Alongside the measurement, the page reads the Network Information API (navigator.connection) in Chrome, Edge and most Android browsers to show the connection type and the browserโ€™s own downlink and round-trip estimate.

Because the transfer is small and served from a CDN close to you, treat the number as an indicator rather than a lab-grade benchmark: it will under-report very fast fibre lines and compressed responses can flatter the result slightly. Why does my speed test show a different result than the speed on my plan?

Your plan quotes the maximum line speed to your provider, while a test measures what actually reaches this browser tab right now. Wi-Fi distance, other devices on the network, VPNs, browser extensions, the server's distance from you and time-of-day congestion all reduce the result. Testing over Ethernet with nothing else downloading gives the closest figure to your plan.

What internet speed do I need for video calls and streaming?

Roughly 1-3 Mbps covers SD video and standard video calls, 5-10 Mbps is comfortable for HD streaming and group calls, and 25 Mbps or more is recommended for 4K. For calls and gaming, latency and jitter matter more than raw speed: aim for latency under about 50 ms and jitter under 30 ms for a stable connection.
