Breakdown
How it works
Engagement rate is the share of your audience that actually reacted to a post. This calculator adds up likes, comments, shares and saves, divides by the number of posts, then divides by your audience and multiplies by 100. With 10,000 followers and 500 total engagements on one post that is 500 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 5.00%. Switch the denominator to Reach for engagement rate by reach (ERR — the fairest measure of how the people who actually saw the post responded) or to Impressions for the stricter number most ad platforms report.
Enter more than one post to get the average engagement rate per post across a campaign or a month of content. The benchmark tells you whether the result is low, average, good or excellent for the platform you picked — Instagram and TikTok audiences engage very differently, so a 2% rate that is mediocre on TikTok is perfectly healthy on Facebook. Every number is worked out in your browser with plain JavaScript: no account, no ads, and none of your analytics data is uploaded anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate engagement rate?
Add up every interaction on a post — likes, comments, shares and saves — then divide by your audience and multiply by 100. With 10,000 followers and 500 total engagements that is 500 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 5.00%. Which audience number you divide by matters: followers gives engagement rate by followers, reach gives ERR (engagement rate by reach) and impressions gives the stricter figure ad platforms report. This calculator does all three and can also average the rate across several posts.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Roughly speaking, under 1% is low, 1–3.5% is average, 3.5–6% is good and above 6% is excellent for engagement rate by followers. Benchmarks differ a lot per platform: TikTok audiences engage far more (average is around 3–9%) while X and Facebook typically sit under 1.5%. The tool shows the band for the platform you pick, and remember that smaller accounts almost always score higher than large ones.
Should I use followers or reach for engagement rate?
Reach is the fairer measure of content quality because it only counts the people who actually saw the post, so it is not punished by inactive followers. Followers is the industry-standard number brands and influencer marketplaces quote, so use it when comparing yourself to public benchmarks. Impressions counts repeat views too, which always produces the lowest rate. Switch the denominator in the dropdown to see all three from the same numbers.
Is my analytics data sent anywhere?
No. The whole calculation runs in your browser with plain JavaScript — there is no account, no handle lookup, no API key and no tracking. You type the numbers straight from your native analytics, nothing is uploaded or stored, and the page keeps working with your network disconnected.
