How it works
An interval is the distance between two pitches, and naming intervals by ear is the core skill behind sight-singing, transcribing songs and improvising. This trainer picks a random interval from the ones you tick, builds both notes with the Web Audio API at equal temperament (A4 = 440 Hz, so every note is 440 × 2^((m − 69) ⁄ 12) hertz for MIDI note m), and plays them ascending, descending or together. Guess with the answer buttons and you instantly see whether you were right, which notes were played and their exact frequencies. Score, accuracy and best streak update as you go, and you can copy the session or download it as CSV to track progress.

How do I train my ear to recognise intervals?
Start small: tick only the major 3rd, perfect 4th, perfect 5th and octave (the Beginner preset) and drill those until you name them without thinking, then add the tritone, minor 6th and the 7ths. Anchor each interval to a song you already know — a perfect 4th is Here Comes the Bride, a perfect 5th is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, a tritone is The Simpsons theme — and sing the interval back before you click an answer. Ten focused minutes a day beats an hour once a week, and the accuracy and streak counters show you which intervals still trip you up.
What is the difference between perfect pitch and relative pitch?
Perfect (absolute) pitch is naming a note in isolation — hearing a tone and knowing it is F#4. Relative pitch is hearing the distance between two notes, which is what this trainer builds. Relative pitch is the practical musical skill: it lets you transcribe a melody, harmonise by ear and improvise in any key, and unlike absolute pitch it can be learned at any age with regular practice.
Does this ear trainer send my audio or answers anywhere?
No. The two notes are generated live by your browser's Web Audio API as oscillators tuned to equal temperament with A4 = 440 Hz, so there are no audio files to download and no server involved. Your answers, score and history stay in the page — copy them or export the CSV if you want a record. There is no sign-up, no ads and no tracking of what you answered.
