Nothing shortlisted yet. Pick a name above and press “Add to shortlist”.

Meanings are the traditional etymologies most commonly cited for each name; scholars often disagree, and a single name can carry different meanings in different languages. Popularity bands are approximate, based on recent US Social Security Administration name lists — treat them as a rough guide, not an exact rank. The list is a curated selection of a few hundred names, not an exhaustive dictionary.

      How it works

This baby name explorer searches a curated list of a few hundred first names from around the world and shows each one with its meaning, language of origin, syllable count and a rough popularity band. Filter by gender, origin, starting letter, name length, style (classic, vintage, nature, biblical, mythology and more) or popularity, and the list updates as you type. Add a surname to preview how the full name and initials look, shortlist your favourites, then copy the shortlist or export it as a CSV.

Everything is embedded in the page and runs on plain JavaScript in your browser: no account, no ads and no server — the names you search for and the shortlist you build never leave your device. Because the list is curated rather than exhaustive, a rare family name may not appear; the filters are there to spark ideas rather than to rank every name ever registered.

      Frequently asked questions

How do I search baby names by meaning?

Type a word such as "moon", "brave" or "Irish" into the search box. Every name is matched on its meaning and origin as well as its spelling, so a single word surfaces every name in the list that carries that sense.

Can I filter by gender, origin or first letter?

Yes. The gender, origin and starts-with filters combine with the search box, so you can ask for unisex Greek names starting with A and see only those.

      Is my shortlist private?

Yes. The explorer runs entirely in your browser and nothing you search or shortlist is sent to a server.
