How it works

Type the bill amount and pick a tip percentage — the tip, the total and everybody's share update instantly as you type. The tip is simply the bill multiplied by the percentage: a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $10, so the total comes to $60. Set "Split between" to the number of people at the table and the calculator divides both the tip and the total, so nobody has to do mental arithmetic while the card machine waits.

The quick-tip buttons cover the usual 10 / 15 / 18 / 20 / 25 percent, and the slider is handy for landing on a round number. The rounding option can round the grand total up to a whole amount, or round each person's share up — the leftover cents just go into the tip. Everything is calculated in your browser with plain JavaScript: no bill amounts are sent anywhere, there is no sign-up and there are no ads. Use Copy result or Download .txt to keep a note of who owes what.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In the United States 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the normal range for table service: 15% for adequate service, 18–20% for good service and 25% for exceptional service. Counter service, takeaway and bars usually get 10% or a rounded-up amount. In most of Europe, Australia and Japan tipping is optional and 5–10% or simply rounding up the bill is plenty. The quick-tip buttons cover 10, 15, 18, 20 and 25% so you can compare the totals before deciding.

How do you calculate a 20% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.20 — or, in your head, take 10% by moving the decimal point one place left and double it. A $85 bill gives 10% = $8.50, so a 20% tip is $17.00 and the total is $102.00. This calculator does the same arithmetic instantly as you type and also shows the effective tip percentage after any rounding.

How do I split a bill with tip between friends?

Add the tip to the bill first, then divide the total by the number of people — splitting the bill before adding the tip leaves the tip short. Set "Split between" to the size of your group and the calculator shows both the tip per person and the total per person. Choose "Round each person's share up" if you want everyone to pay a whole amount; the extra cents are added to the tip so the totals still match.
