Story Prompt Generator
Generate random story prompts by genre, with optional twists, opening lines and a seed for reproducible batches.
5 prompts generated.
Prompts are starting points, not finished plots — swap the genre, change the ending, keep only the bit you like.
How it works
Each prompt is built from four hand-written parts: a character with a complication baked in, a goal with a clock on it, a setting that shapes the story, and a “but…” that puts the two in conflict. Every genre has its own curated pools, so a mystery prompt never borrows a dragon by accident. Tick Add a twist for a mid-story turn drawn from a shared pool, and Add an opening line for a first sentence you can steal outright.
Leave the seed box empty and every click of Generate prompts gives a fresh batch. Type anything into it — a number, a workshop name — and the results become reproducible: the same seed with the same settings always produces the same list, which is useful for running a writing group where everyone should get identical prompts. The word pools are deliberately curated rather than exhaustive, so the prompts stay usable rather than generic. Everything runs as plain JavaScript in your browser: no server, no signup, no account, and nothing you generate is sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How does the story prompt generator work?
Every prompt is assembled from four hand-written parts: a character with a built-in complication, a goal with a clock on it, a setting that shapes the story, and a "but…" that puts them in conflict. Each genre has its own curated pools, so a mystery prompt never borrows a dragon by accident. You can also switch on a mid-story twist and an opening line you can steal outright.
Can I get the same prompts again later?
Yes — type anything into the Seed box. The same seed with the same genre, count and toggles always produces exactly the same list, so you can share a seed with a writing group or class and everyone gets identical prompts. Leave the seed empty and every click of Generate prompts gives a brand-new batch.
Is anything sent to a server or an AI model?
No. The word pools are embedded in the page and the prompts are put together by plain JavaScript in your browser. There is no AI call, no account, no signup and no tracking of what you generate — the tool works offline once the page has loaded.
