How it works

A rowing split is simply how long it takes you to cover 500 metres: split = time × 500 ÷ distance. Row 2000 m in 7:00 (420 seconds) and your split is 420 × 500 ÷ 2000 = 105 seconds, shown as 1:45.0 per 500 m. The calculator solves the same relationship in whichever direction you need: split from distance and time, finish time from a target split, or how far you will travel in a fixed piece at a given pace.

Power uses the Concept2 indoor rower formula watts = 2.80 ÷ pace³, where pace is seconds per metre — so a 1:45 split is 2.80 ÷ 0.21³ ≈ 302 watts. Calories use Concept2’s published conversion calories/hour = watts × 4 × 0.8604 + 300, which includes the base metabolic allowance the monitor adds, then scales it by your piece length. Enter an optional stroke rate and you also get total strokes and metres per stroke.

How do you calculate a rowing split?

A split is how long it takes you to cover 500 metres, so split = time × 500 ÷ distance. Row 2000 m in 7:00 (420 seconds) and your split is 420 × 500 ÷ 2000 = 105 seconds, written 1:45.0 per 500 m. The calculator also runs the sum backwards: give it a distance and a target split to get your finish time, or a time and a split to get the distance you would cover.

How many watts is a 1:45 or 2:00 split?

Concept2 ergometers convert pace to power with watts = 2.80 ÷ pace³, where pace is seconds per metre. A 1:45 split is 105 ÷ 500 = 0.21 s/m, so 2.80 ÷ 0.21³ ≈ 302 watts. A 2:00 split works out at about 203 watts, and a 1:30 split at about 480 watts — power rises with the cube of speed, which is why shaving a few seconds off your split feels so much harder.

How are the calories and the race projections worked out?

Calories use Concept2's published conversion, calories/hour = watts × 4 × 0.8604 + 300, scaled by how long your piece lasted; the +300 is the resting allowance the monitor includes, so the number is an estimate for the machine rather than a measurement of your body. The projection table shows each standard distance at your current split, plus a Paul's Law estimate, the rowing rule of thumb that your split slows by roughly 5 seconds every time the distance doubles.
