Splits assume a perfectly even effort on flat ground. Hills, heat, wind and fatigue all move real race times, so treat these numbers as a training target rather than a promise.

How it works

Running pace is simply time divided by distance: run 10 km in 50 minutes and your pace is 3000 seconds รท 10 km = 300 seconds, or 5:00 per km. Because a mile is 1.609344 km, the same effort is 8:03 per mile and a speed of 12.00 km/h (7.46 mph). This calculator does all three conversions at once and works in whichever direction you need: pick โ€œPaceโ€ to get your min/km and min/mile from a distance and a time, โ€œFinish timeโ€ to see what a target pace would deliver over a set distance, or โ€œDistanceโ€ to find out how far a given time at a given pace takes you.

Enter the distance in kilometres, miles or metres โ€” or tap a 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon preset โ€” and the splits table underneath shows the even-pace time for 400 m, 1 km, 1 mile, 5K, 10K, 21.0975 km and 42.195 km, which is exactly what you want written on your wrist on race day. Everything is plain arithmetic running in your browser with JavaScript: no account, no ads and nothing about your training is uploaded or stored anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your time by the distance you covered. Run 10 km in 50 minutes and that is 3000 seconds รท 10 km = 300 seconds per kilometre, which is a pace of 5:00 /km. To get the same pace per mile, multiply by 1.609344 (a mile is 1.609344 km), giving 483 seconds or 8:03 /mi. Speed is the inverse: 3600 รท 300 = 12.00 km/h, or 7.46 mph. This calculator does all of it as you type. Just enter the distance and the time and leave the mode on "Pace".

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply your min/km pace by 1.609344 to get min/mile, and divide by 1.609344 to go the other way. A 5:00 /km pace is 8:03 /mi; a 8:00 /mi pace is 4:58 /km. Because the arithmetic is in seconds it is easy to slip up by hand, so this tool always shows both units side by side, along with km/h and mph. You can also enter your target pace per mile directly with the "Pace per" selector, and the conversion happens automatically.

What pace do I need for a sub 4 hour marathon?

A marathon is 42.195 km (26.219 miles), so 4 hours works out at 14400 รท 42.195 = 341 seconds per kilometre, which is about 5:41 /km or 9:09 /mi. Aim slightly faster, around 5:35 /km, to leave a buffer for water stops and the extra distance you run by weaving. Switch this calculator to "Finish time", tap the Marathon preset and try target paces until the finish time reads what you want, then copy or download the splits table for 5K, 10K and half-marathon checkpoints to carry on race day.
