How it works

Military time is the 24-hour clock as written in the US armed forces and NATO: four digits, no colon, leading zeros kept, and the word hours spoken at the end. Converting from the standard 12-hour clock is one rule for each half of the day. For AM times, keep the hour and pad it to two digits — 7:05 AM is 0705 — except 12 AM (midnight), which becomes 0000. For PM times, add 12 to the hour — 2:30 PM is 14:30, written 1430 — except 12 PM (noon), which stays 1200. Going the other way, subtract 12 from any hour of 13 or higher and add PM, so 2100 is 9:00 PM.

Pronunciation follows the same convention as the written form. Whole hours end in “hundred” (0800 is zero eight hundred hours, 1200 is twelve hundred hours), and minutes are read as a number after the hour (1430 is fourteen thirty hours, 0005 is zero zero zero five hours). Midnight is normally written 0000 and read zero hundred hours; 2400 is also accepted for the very end of a day, and this converter reads it as midnight.
