Hangman Word Picker
Pick random hangman words by category and difficulty, shown as blanks with a letter count and hint.
405 words match your filters.
Words come from a curated list of 405 common, family-friendly English words. Blanks stay hidden until you press Reveal.
How it works
Pick a category and a difficulty and the tool draws random hangman words from a curated 405-word list. Difficulty is purely word length: easy is 3โ5 letters, medium 6โ8 and hard 9 or more, which is the usual way hangman is graded because longer words give more chances to guess a wrong letter. Each word is shown as blanks with its letter count and category as the hint, so you can hold up the screen without spoiling the answer; press Reveal on a word (or Reveal all) when the round is over.
Type anything into the Seed box to make the draw repeatable: the same seed with the same
category, difficulty and count always produces the same words, which is handy for running the
same set of rounds in two classrooms or rematching a friend. Leave it blank for a fresh random
draw every time. You can also link straight to a fixed game with
?seed=yourseed in the URL. Everything โ the word list, the shuffle and the
downloads โ runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How does the picker choose hangman words?
It draws from a curated list of 405 common, family-friendly English words grouped into nine categories. Your category and difficulty filters build a pool, the pool is shuffled with a Fisher-Yates shuffle and the first N words are shown, so no word is repeated within a draw. The list is hand-picked rather than a full dictionary, which keeps out obscure and unsuitable words.
What makes a hangman word easy or hard?
Length is the usual measure, so this tool grades easy as 3 to 5 letters, medium as 6 to 8 and hard as 9 or more. Longer words give guessers more blanks to fill and more chances to burn a wrong letter. Words with rare letters such as J, Q, X or Z are harder again, which is why categories like Technology and Countries tend to play tougher.
Can I get the same words again for a rematch?
Yes. Type anything into the Seed box and the same seed with the same category, difficulty and word count always produces the same draw, so two groups can play identical rounds. You can also share a link with ?seed=yourseed on the end. Leave the seed blank for a fresh random draw each time.
