How it works

Pick a letter grade and the credit hours for each course and your grade point average is recalculated as you type. GPA is a credit-weighted average: every course is turned into quality points by multiplying its grade points by its credits (an A worth 4.0 in a 3-credit class gives 12 quality points), all the quality points are added up, and the total is divided by the total number of credits. That is why a high grade in a 4-credit class moves your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit class.

The unweighted GPA caps every course at 4.0 (or 4.3 if you switch to the scale where A+ is worth 4.3). The weighted GPA adds the usual honors bonus of +0.5 and the AP/IB/dual-enrolment bonus of +1.0 to each passing course, which is how most high schools reward harder classes. A failing grade never receives a bonus. Fill in the optional cumulative section with your previous GPA and the credits behind it to see where this term leaves your overall average. Everything is calculated in your browser with plain JavaScript — no sign-up, no ads, and none of your grades ever leave your device.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate GPA?

GPA is a credit-weighted average. Convert each letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 and so on), multiply those points by the course's credit hours to get quality points, add the quality points for every course, then divide by the total credits. For example an A in a 3-credit class (12 points), a B in a 4-credit class (12 points) and a C+ in a 2-credit class (4.6 points) give 28.6 quality points over 9 credits, which is a 3.18 GPA.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA treats every class the same and tops out at 4.0, so an A is 4.0 whether it was gym or AP Calculus. A weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes — usually +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP, IB or dual-enrolment — so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0 and the average can go above 4.0. This calculator shows both at once; pick the course type per row and a failing grade never receives a bonus.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Your cumulative GPA blends this term with everything before it. Multiply your previous GPA by the credits it was earned over to get your prior quality points, add this term's quality points, then divide by all the credits combined. Enter your previous GPA and credits earned so far in the optional cumulative section and the calculator does it for you — a 3.5 GPA over 30 credits plus 28.6 points from 9 new credits gives a 3.43 cumulative GPA.
