How it works

Cups are a measure of volume and grams are a measure of weight, so there is no single "cups to grams" number — a cup of flour weighs about 125 g while a cup of honey weighs about 340 g. That is why this converter asks for the ingredient: it looks up the standard weight of one US cup, turns it into a density, and converts your amount through grams. Volume-to-volume (tablespoons to cups) and weight-to-weight (ounces to grams) conversions use the exact legal definitions instead: 1 US cup is 236.5882365 ml, 1 tablespoon is 1/16 cup, 1 ounce is 28.349523125 g.

Type the amount as a decimal (0.75), a fraction (3/4), a mixed number (1 1/2) or a fraction character () — recipes are written that way. The table underneath shows the same quantity in teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, millilitres, fluid ounces, grams, ounces and pounds at once, and the oven panel converts between Celsius, Fahrenheit and UK gas marks (°F = 250 + 25 × gas mark). Everything is plain JavaScript running in your browser: no accounts, no ads, no uploads, and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is 1 cup of flour?

One US cup of all-purpose (plain) flour weighs about 125 g. Bread flour is heavier at roughly 130 g per cup, cake flour lighter at about 114 g, and wholemeal flour around 120 g. Pick the flour in the ingredient list and the converter uses the matching weight.

Why does 1 cup weigh a different amount for every ingredient?

Cups measure volume and grams measure weight, so the answer depends on how dense the ingredient is. One cup of granulated sugar is about 200 g, butter about 227 g and honey about 340 g, while cocoa powder is only about 85 g. That is why this converter asks which ingredient you are measuring instead of using a single cups-to-grams number.

What is 180°C in Fahrenheit and gas mark?

180 °C is 356 °F, usually written as 350 °F in US recipes, and that is gas mark 4, a moderate oven. The oven panel converts any temperature between Celsius, Fahrenheit and UK gas marks using °F = 250 + 25 × gas mark.
