How it works
Type or paste your text and the character count updates on every keystroke — total characters, characters without spaces, letters, digits, words, lines and the UTF-8 byte size. Characters are counted by code point, so an emoji or an accented letter counts as one character rather than two, which is how social networks count them too.
Pick a character limit — SEO title tag, meta description, SMS, an X post, an Instagram caption, a LinkedIn post, or your own custom number — and the bar shows how much room is left and warns you the moment you go over. Everything is computed in your browser with JavaScript, so nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored anywhere.

How many characters are in my text?
Paste or type your text into the box and the character count appears immediately — total characters, characters without spaces, letters, digits, words, lines and the UTF-8 byte size. Nothing is sent anywhere; the counting happens in your browser as you type.
Does the character count include spaces?
Both numbers are shown. "Characters" counts everything you typed, including spaces, tabs and line breaks, which is what social networks and form limits count. "Chars (no spaces)" strips all whitespace, which is what most academic and printing limits mean.
What is the character limit for a tweet, an SMS or a meta description?
An X (Twitter) post allows 280 characters, a single SMS message 160, an SEO meta description about 155 and a title tag about 60. Instagram captions allow 2,200 and LinkedIn posts 3,000. Pick one from the limit menu — or enter your own — and the bar shows how many characters you have left and warns you when you go over.
